Mortal Kombat: The Reboot that Never Happened

Postby taz » Sat Nov 21, 2009 8:16 pm

The Mortal Kombat series has been stagnant for years now. MK vs DC was an original idea -- and fun to play for the most part -- but the core series has looked the same since MK; Deadly Alliance was released way back in 2002. It doesn't help that the characters have had little to no development in that time either. Enter a former Midway employee named Vincent Proce and the best redesign of the players of this stale brawler so far.

This collection of amazing drawings was for a pitch he made to Midway for a new Mortal Kombat game that never got off the ground, which as you can see from the sketches, is a damn shame. Really, they picked MK vs DC over this?

pics are too big so here the link to it

In the state that its in, MK really needs a reboot.
What if the world had no Streets of Rage?

Did someone say "MORTAL KOMBAT?"
Because I'm pretty sure I just heard something that sounded like "MORTAL KOMBAT".

They're certainly interesting takes on the characters, and the guy's art style is pretty fucking awesome. But yeah,Sonya parading around in a thong and not much else is extremely OOC for her. =/
Yep, because Zombie Liu Kang=No no. It's way too cliche.

 I see what you did there.
LAWL WHY IS KANO NOT AUSTRALIAN!!

USELESS TRIVIA NO ONE CARES ABOUT:
If you go by the official MK1 bios,Kano really is half-Japanese,half-American. However,Trevor Goddard, who was a Britain-born Australian, played Kano as such in the movie,Aussie accent and all (SNOIPIN'S A GOOD JOB MOITE). Long story short, his performance was so kickass, that in Deadly Alliance Kano was retconned into an Aussie.

Scorpion looks cool as fuck.

what MK needs is for the creator to follow through on shit he promises will happen in the game he's promoting, only to have NONE OF THE SHIT HE PROMOTED ACTUALLY FUCKING HAPPEN.

Out of all the questions I have this is the most craziest one... How come Johnny Cage is still is back to life and not Lui Kang. Didn't little Johnny die??? :|

They came up with the "Johnny Cage died" for MK3 and UMK3 coz his mo-cap actor had some issues with Midway after MK2 release.
However, they got a new one for Cage in Trilogy whose story is the same as MK3 and UMK3 so they came up with "the fusion of Earthrealm and Outworld blocked Cage's soul to his trip to the paradise so he could return in his body and can help his friends defeat Shao Kahn. And then after Kanh's defeat, his soul returned to where it belongs."

With MK4, with teh characters being 3D models, they could make Cage returned with a simple "Raiden ressurected Cage".

For Liu Kang, they wanted a unepected change fo story coz he's the MK champion and his death would be suprising. But then, I guess they regretted it so they made Liu Kang a zombie whose ending is that he recover his human form and become once again the MK champion.

....Yeah, I'm a MK geek ^^'

*gasp* i had no idea!

but yeah, i gotta say i liked trilogy's actor for cage the best. he looked the most badass, but johnny was more of a funny character so i could see why people wouldn't like that version.

i wasnt a big fan of deadly alliance though, the whole 3 fighting styles thing kinda threw me off, plus i didnt like the designs for most of my favorite characters in the game, like jax, reptile, and johnny cage :P but the krypt idea was nice.

Half of this article is devoted to it. It sounds so hilariously bad that it's awesome.

Bloodstorm was made by Incredible Technologies, who went on to make the other worst digitised fighting game of all time: Street Fighter The Movie.

Here's the whole story by some guy who worked on both and thought his work was destined for greatness, only to end up humbled by the experience:
