In-depth character discussion: Mr. X

Postby cong100 » Tue Aug 02, 2011 7:11 am

I've noticed that nobody really talks up about Mr. X. maybe it's because he's the main bad-guy and we'd rather pound on him than play as him. I've been able to beat mania solo even with the cheat playing against 2 bosses at the same time on starting with 3 lives. Here are the reasons why I like him:

-Best neutral special (standing A) in the game, imo. Just stand up near the top of the plane and Mr. X's tommy gun will mow everyone down. I usually will try to capitalize on that moment of respite for me by rushing towards my enemies and do an tommy gun ram and knock 'em all down again. It's also very useful for getting that one near guarantee hit to end a fight with a boss.

-For a big guy, Mr. X is a deceptively speedy fighter. His punches comes out fast, and has very good reach. It's useful for out-poking most of your enemies.

- Mr. X's offensive special (Fwd + A) is super useful in that you can use it to snipe on enemies who are idle all the way on the other side of the battlefield. Getting your enemies softened up before they can even get near you is very helpful indeed.

- His regular blitz, the tommy gun ram, is fast, powerful and has a big enough collision box that it can knock down an entire group of baddies.

-Finally, Mr. X's aerial game is excellent ... no, i'm not talk about Mr. X himself, but rather in how effective he is able to launch his foes!! He can throw an enemy so fast, efficient and far that I could almost wipe out an entire group of bad guys just by throwing people around.

Any mod rename this thread to "In-depth character discussion: Mr. X", please? :P lol, sorry, me and my OCD. :P

X is certainly a different character than the others. I cannot say he's bad or better than other tier characters, just... different.

Definitely his strength lies in crowd control and he's effective as long he keeps standing at the upper areas of the stage. However, it's A special is also a drawback when you need to get rid of enemies surrounding you and hitting you since it doesn't cover enemies from behind, even if you have invincibility frames while doing it, you'd still get swarmed if you don't get out from there.

Lack of police and not use of weapons also give him a big disadvantage as well, but if you know how to use X's advantages, i don't think it's a big problem.

I just think X should be played in a complete different style from the rest of the characters and that's the key to perform well.

I don't play him much, I think of him as the "easy mode" char. Don't appeal to me.
I'm not trolling X, he's not IMBA but simple.
First time I played a game with him, I did SoR1 route solo on mania repeating the last 3 stages, and still ended up with 8 lives and no continues used. Never played him again, except on survival.

Mr. X prioritizes at safety. But not a good damage dealer. I found his moves doing less damage-per-second than high-tier characters like Axel, Shuiva, Skate SOR2 due to lack of comboability.

Mr. X is a strong character. You can play him good without much training, in other words: cheap. But he has the same problem as Zan, that is boring.

I don't find Mr. X boring at all. I think he is great fun to use.

Mr. X is too simplistic in terms of gameplay IMO. But like it was said, he's strong, fast and vicious. Mr. X also has good comedy value; Running around with that wicked grin on his face and blasting everyone away with his tommy gun. Can't beat that.

I've not been very interested in using Mr. X, which I blame on his gun. Cheap bastard ;). It's going to be a long time before I start playing him! Thanks for the write-up.

I totally agree with Largamon about the comedy value :D When we first unlocked Mr. X couldn't help the laugh bursts triggered by his headbutts and rifle butt move etc :D And the grin in his face

I have played Elle alot recently trying to master her but then I took Mr.X and it was great balance. Hes quite easy (gameplay wise, as said) and straightforward to play, which is perfect after playing eg Elle. Kind of break for your brain :D You don't have to focus on long combos. Different chars bring great variation to the game!

Do you guys ever use the grab where Mr.X jumps over the opponent ("the vault" move)? It does quite little damage and I almost never use it. If theres somebody right behind the mook you grabbed, maybe then? I haven't managed to hit anybody with it so far:D

I don't consider his tommygun as imba, in the end it doesn't do that much damage. And not having police/etc balances it a little, maybe? Anyways, hes fun to play with every now and then (nothing to do with my love to 30's and 40's gangster theme  and ofc its also fun to create chaos as the Joker.. )

I began to play Mr. X yesterday.
Mr. X's jump then down + B can take about 15% lifebar per hit, this is very powerful.
Mr. X has the 2nd rank running speed in the game, same as Skate and Roo, faster than Shiva and Blaze. So he can control enemies with jump then down + B very easily.

Pretty cheap move. attack throw (invincible), and works on Bongo, the recovery is ok.
Max pause delay SoR3: a.k.a"The Trash Compactor" => Mania killer mode.
Here is a great sprite ressource for fighting games

OK...? Would you mind telling me in which situations you use it / post some video in which it is useful? Because in many situations you can do a much more damaging regular throw and continue ass-whipping from there, no?:D If you are implying you know something I don't, then please tell me

Here, Laucorn playing with X (IMHO, one of the best X players I've seen so far).

Pay attention especially on the Mona & Lisa fight, X will do a vault kick over Lisa who's trying to do a power wave but the only thing she got was a sole in her face at 4:17.

Besides, it can be used for spacing yourself forward, evade incoming attacks, hit enemies who love mid-range attacks (like Lisa above, for example). Not to mention it's one of the X grabs that can't be safe rolled (by Shiva, Roo, Judos or Twins) neither pancaked (Bongos and Ben-3's)
