What kind of music do you think fits beat'em ups better?

Postby Bash » Thu May 31, 2012 4:01 pm

The title says it all, and I'm just curious about your opinions. Personally, I think it's something agressive, like hard rock--- which it's not totally a surprise, since it's my fave kind of music. 8)

Depends of the stage, the mood and the theme. I've experimented several kinds of music in my stages and some work wonders. I even tried some drum'n'bass, trance, house, disco, punk, funk, heavy metal, etc.

This.

The SoR series is a perfect example. The soundtracks for the 3 games are incredibly varied and each of them are fitting to their setting and storyline.

I just asked the wrong way. :| For instance (and giving badjab's example) the original sor had a majority of house/dance. So what I was trying to ask is: what kind of majority of music should be used in beat'em ups?

But yeah, Don Vecta's answer can answer this aswell. So thanks 8)

Sometimes it's about mix and match as well. Some odd combination could work as well.

For example, I'm using a drum'n'bass track in an underground route of a construction mall, parking lot and sewers and worked wonders.

Pretty much the idea is to give a perfect mood that matches the design of your stages... certainly you wouldn't put power ballads in a punk concert based stage, right?

With mods and stuff, If you're good enough you can make just about any music fit. Like even a godly orchestral piece can be fitted to a boss fight involving a thunder storm and lightning if it was done in a proper way.

With the beat'em up in general though, It's more often than not the upbeat selections that suffice IMO.
The box said "Requires Windows 95 or better." I can't understand why it won't work on my Linux computer.

I've been wondering something for a little while now, and I'm not sure if this is the right place to bring it up...but would it be a faux pas to use instrumental soundtracks from other media (like anime, for instance) in building a mod?

As long it fits and you have it looped properly, so... why not?

Okay! I asked because I was thinking of incorporating one or two tracks from the Initial D soundtrack to a couple of party/night-time street scenes in my mod that I'm currently reworking, to give it a bit of "original" flavor.

I've been using tons of non-gaming tracks as well, but all of them instrumentals. Such as Maxi Preist - Close to you or Airwaves - Alone in the Dark or Patrice Rushens - Forget me Nots (still not released that mod), so yeah, sure, that works.
