Best of the Genres!

Postby wonderfulwardy » Mon Feb 11, 2008 11:01 pm

I don't know if any other topic has been mentioned like this before but I just thought I should post my favourite kick-ass game of mostly all genres and see what other people come up with too. These can be games that are either out or games that are about to get a release date within the year of 2008.

Why best of each genre you might say?... Well, to tell you the truth, I am a gamer obsessed with only buying what I consider the very best of games and normally tend to only own a single game of each genre unless it can be classed as a mixed kind. Well, here goes:-

Fighters:-
Virtua Fighter 5 (Xbox 360) - Hardcore 3D Fighter
Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii) - Party Arena-Based Fighter
& Close choice between:-
Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360) & Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (XBLA) - Projectile Fighter

Racers:-
Burnout Paradise (Xbox 360) - Open World Racer
Outrun 2006: Coast2Coast (Xbox) - Classic Arcade Racer
& close choice between:-
Mario Kart (Wii) & GripShift - Weapon-Based Racer

FPS:-
Timesplitters 4 (?) - Ultimately Non-Serious, Pure Fun FPS

Puzzlers:-
Hanagumi Taisen Columns 2 (Dreamcast) - Most In-Depth Strategic Puzzler
Twinkle Star Sprites (Saturn) - Unique Puzzle / Traditional Shooter Hybrid

Strategy:-
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin (DS) - All out Wireless Multiplayer Thinking Strategy
Worms World Party (PC) - Multiplayer Party Strategy

Scrolling Beat Em' Up:-
Streets of Rage Remake (Xbox?) - Greatest 2D Beat Em' Up Improved upon

Platformers:-
Sonic The Hedgehog 1, 2, & 3K: My Personal Hacks (Xbox) - Favourite 2D Platformers
Super Mario 64 (Wii-Gamecube Controller) - Favourite 3D Platformer

Adventure
Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360) - Survival Horror Adventure

Much of your list disgusts me. I'll put one up a little later.

I'm mostly an arcade gamer, though I have some favies on platforms and handhelds.

Fighters:-
The King of Fighters series. The best in 2D.
Tekken series (and yes, for the Tekken hates you know what to do by puting gently your lips on my round, latino ass. Thanx).
Garou Densetsu (Fatal Fury) series.
Ryuuko no Ken (Art of Fighting) series.

Racers:-
Outrun series. Enough said.

FPS:-
None... oh wait, there was this twisted arcade FPS called CarnEvil. Real freaky game, I so loved it!
Oh yeah, a possible entry might be Silent Hill: Arcade. Only played it in Japan once and was great. I must play it deeply to make it my favie.

Puzzlers:-
Bejeweled. Enough addiction.

Strategy:-
Final Fantasy Tactics. Enough said.

Scrolling Beat Em' Up:-
Streets of Rage series. Greatest 2D Beat Em' Up, including our beloved Remake.
Final Fight series. Classic badassery.
Double Dragon series. Everything began with it. Special love for 1 2 and Super.
Crime Fighters/Vendetta. Grittiness to the top. Luv u Konami!

Platformers:-
Castlevania series. Symphony of the Night is, definitely, my passion.

Horror Survivor/Adventure:-
Silent Hill series. Everything beyond human's grasp of sanity.
Fatal Frame series. Smile to the camera.

RPG's:-
Wizardry series. Special love for V and VIII.
Chronno Trigger. This game changed my childhood.
Earthbound. Contemporary quest made of the fabric of Nintendo and WIN.
Final Fantasy series. Yes, hate me and bite me fags, IV, V, VI, VII and IX took many hours of my life and have a special fondness of those titles. And yes, FUCK X, and X-2!!
Valkyries Profile. This game was a beautiful symphony for my senses. Sylmeria i'm yet to play it, though.
Dragonquest VIII. Old school RPG'ing extravaganza.

Free Roaming:-
Grand Theft Auto series. Crime and redemption FOR GREAT INJUSTICE! Special love for 3, VC, SA and LCS.
The Godfather. Stylish italiano thug behind the strings of the Corleone family. One day, and that day might never happen...
Scarface. Yes, cockaroaches, Tony Montana is ALIVE, chazzas!

Music Games:-
Pump it up series. Best dancing simulation ever. The source of the best freestyle.
EZ2Dancer. Another hot Dancing game. Made me win 2 titles in China with freestyle.

That's it. for now.

I don't know about that game but Kirby 64 was definatly the definate version due to mixing two of the abilities together. I so want this to appear on Virtual Console. Come on Nintendo, make it happen!

I noticed a few people on here choose Columns as one of their favourite puzzlers.
Sorry to go slightly off subject but have any of you guys ever heard of Hanagumi Taisen Columns 2 for the Dreamcast?
If not, All Columns & Puzzler fans should deffinatly check out this underated gem out.
It has way more strategy then any other puzzler that I know of.
I really wish more puzzle games had more depth and overall strategy like this one.

theres no worry about off topic in an off topic topic. just as long as it doesn't mean ill will otwards others, which its not.

anyways, this columns you speak of. it sounds interesting, I only played the first and third (why the 2nd was on the arcade instead of genesis i don't know). I'll be sure to take a look. I always sort of cheated at columns 5 mil. gems accumulated and 3 mil points just by pausing everytime a gems is about ready to fall. maybe thats what in other puzzlers they obscure the screen.

Reading others lists, I missed a lot of games in my list:

Final Fantasy Series (my favorites are VI, VIII, X and XII), FF Tactics, Castlevania series (and yeah, SotN is the one I have played the most), Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Dragon Quest VIII, Fable, Sonic Heroes (IMO the best 3D Sonic yet...), Max Payne II, The Legend of Zelda - A link to the Past/Ocarina of Time/Twilight Princess, Splinter Cell, Kingdom Hearts, Cybernator, Super Mario World 2...damn it, I would never end if I keep going like this...
