Can't Save

Postby rtsoi » Wed Oct 12, 2011 11:48 pm

My progress doesn't seem to save anymore.

I beat the game, earn my points, buy from the shop, then when I exit the game and shut off my computer, everything I did is gone.

I know it used to save since I still have all my unlocked characters and points from before.

Any help?

Is your savegame file (savegame.sor) or perhaps your SoRR directory set to Read-Only? That'd be my first guess at what the problem is.

Nope

Everything else I've done before is saved.

I have all the unlocked characters and other things I've bought from the shop but nothing gets saved, anymore.

Have you bought everything from the shop? What exactly is it that's not saving, a certain shop item specifically? If you change game options and quit does it save those? Are you doing something unusual like playing the game from within a zip file? Is your hard drive out of disk space?

I've never heard of this happening unless you play the game from within the .zip file or if the save file is perhaps set to read only, so we'll probably need more specifics.

I've bought all the secret characters and many of the other extras a while ago.

I open the game and buy other things (SOR1 versions, weapons never disappear, 2X bosses, etc).

I play the game, beat it, get more points, etc.

I close the game and the next day, everything is back to before I did the above. I still have all the other things I've bought before(Shiva, Mr X, Elle, Rudra, Roo, Ash) but none of the new things.

My options don't stay on Mania either. Plenty of disk space. Not set to Read Only.

You're positive you're playing the game from within a standard folder and not within a zipped .rar or .zip file?

Is this issue with settings not saving happening on any other games on your computer? I mean, I suppose that could happen if you have something like Deep Freeze installed that keeps rolling back your computer's data.

"My options don't stay on Mania either. Plenty of disk space. Not set to Read Only."

What operating system are you running? I'll assume Windows XP for now.

Please humor me; right click on the folder containing all of SoRR's files (named SoRRv5 by default I believe) and select 'Properties'. Beside 'Attributes', if there's a black check mark or a grey check mark beside 'Read-Only', uncheck the box and hit 'Apply'. It should ask you if you want to apply the changes to just the folder or to the folder, subfolders and all files inside. Select the latter option (should be the one on the bottom) and hit 'Ok'.

Make sure you don't have any other instances of SoRR running in the background as they will override and shop things you buy or options you set I think (worse comes to worse reboot to make sure) and then try running SoRR and buying stuff/changing options. Then, close the game and re-open it.

Well, just checking for an old bug:
In v4, if you exit by other ways than the main menu (ESC on title), it will not record that session progress.
Are you exiting with alt+X? Try buying something and exiting from the main menu, and see if it saves.

Well, I guess this is no longer an issue into v5, but it reminds me so I had to try. Don't mind my post if this has been fixed.

That's a good point, I thought closing it by clicking X while windowed might be doing it, but I tested it out and the options saved just fine.

Tried out Alt-X, looks like that saved the settings if you go to options, change something, exit to the top menu and then hit Alt-X. I did try changing the difficulty, backing out to the main menu and opening Task Manager - closing SoRR.exe's process that way causes the options not to save, but I seriously doubt that's his issue unless that's how he's closing the game for some reason, which would be especially odd.

I followed your advice and unchecked the Read Only box, applied, went in the game, bought something, exited.

Went back in and my newly bought item didn't save.

Went back to check the Attributes and the gray check mark is back.

Running Vista, if that matters.

Hrm... okay, try this: download a fresh copy of SoRRv5 and unzip it into a separate folder (call it SoRRv5 NEW or something). Make a backup of savegame.sor and put it somewhere outside your SoRRv5 folder just in case. Then, copy and paste your old savefile into the new SoRRv5 folder's 'Savegame' directory and then delete the savegame.sor file from your old copy of SoRRv5. Now try running your old copy of SoRRv5; it should act as though you're just running the game for the first time and have nothing in the shop and all the default settings. Try changing some settings and exiting, then re-open the old copy of SoRRv5 to see if it saves your settings properly on the new savegame.sor file it should have created.

Next, in the new copy of SoRRv5 you downloaded, open it to see if you can load your old savefile, and try changing options/buying in the shop, then exiting the game and reopening the game like you did before.

If you're able to save your changes with a new savefile on your old copy of SoRRv5, then perhaps there's some kind of strange bug/corruption that's affected your savegame.sor. However, if your old savegame.sor file opens and saves the shop/options properly in a newly downloaded copy of SoRRv5, then something weird's going on with your old copy of SoRRv5. Just keep using your old savefile in the new copy of SoRRv5 I guess if that's the case.

Hopefully one of those two allow your options and stuff bought in the shop, as otherwise I'd be stumped.

I was thinking about "corruption", maybe it will be faster to download again and start a new savegame than waste time trying to fix. I don't remember anyone else having this bug, maybe it's rare.

I finally figured it out...

I had 2 savegame.sor files in my SORRV5 folder, for some reason...

One was in the SORRV5 folder along with everything else. A folder called savegame, which was hidden for some reason, had another savegame.sor file within it and it was set to Read-Only...

I unchecked it, bought some stuff and changed some options, exited and went in and my changes were saved.

Thanks for all your help...
