How do you execute Max's powerbomb?

I'm having a really hard time figuring out how to execute Max's special grab. Many forum posts on this site say that it's simply Grab + X (i.e. the special move button) but every time I do that he just cancels out of the grab with the lariat. I've tried pressing different directions + X but nothing seems to work. I've seen it once because I did it on accident, but I can't seem to do it again. Please help.
